Dr. John Kalomiros

1. General Information

John A. Kalomiros received the degree of Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1984 and a Masters degree in Electronics in 1987. His first doctoral thesis is on the characterization of materials for micro-electronic devices. His second PhD thesis is on new techniques for the localization of autonomous vehicles for real-time robotic applications.

He has collaborated with a number of research Institutes, like the Institute fur Angewandte Physik in Karlsruhe, Germany (1988-1989) and the Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft fur Synchrotronstrahlung m.b.H. in Berlin, Germany (1994-1998). He has also worked with corporations like System Level Solutions for the development and testing of digital Intellectual Property processing cores (2005-2007). He has participated in many research projects as project coordinator or as a member of the research team.

He has co-authored thirty publications in international scientific journals and twenty-five publications in international or national conference proceedings. He has co-authored two books (Tziolas Editions) on microcontrollers and digital measurements and instrumentation. Also, he has written several tutorial notes. His publications address research topics in the two major paths he has followed in his career, namely solid-state microelectronics and digital circuits and systems with emphasis in machine vision systems. He is a reviewer and editor in International Journals and Conferences and has attracted more than 250 citations (excluding auto-citations).

From 1994 until 2007 he taught Computer Architecture and Electronics in the secondary technological education, Section of Computer Systems and Networks. During the years 2000-2005 he counseled the Greek Ministry of Education on issues of technological education.

He is currently Associate Professor at the Technological and Educational Institute of Central Macedonia (Serres), Greece, Department of Informatics and Communications. He teaches Analog and Digital Electronics, Embedded Systems and related subjects. His recent research interests include microcontrollers, machine vision and digital systems design with applications in Robotics. He is also working on systems for digital measurements and instrumentation.

2. Studies

1984: Diploma in Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

1988: Masters degree in Electronics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

1989: Presentation of PhD thesis titled “Study of some properties of the semiconductor family ZnxIn2Sx+3” which was accredited with honors by the Physics department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (supervisor Prof. John Spyridelis).

1994-1998: Post doctoral research in collaboration with the Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft fur Synchrotronstrahlung m.b.H. in Berlin, Germany, under the supervision of Professor Eleni Paloura.

2010: Presentation of a second PhD thesis titled “Development and Implementation of new techniques for the real-time localization of robotic vehicles” which was accredited with honors by the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Polytechnic School of the Democritus University of Thrace (supervisor Ass. Prof. John Lygouras).

 

3. Participation in funded research projects

1. Project coordinator of a research program funded by the Research Committee of the Technological and Educational Institute of Serres, titled “Dense disparity features for fast stereo vision” (project number 67/9/26.6.2012). The project has been completed successfully.

2. Member of the research group in a research project under Archimedes, jointly funded by the European Union and national funds. Project title: "Evolutionary Hardware". Project coordinator: Prof. S. Kazarlis. The project has been completed successfully.

3. Project coordinator of a research program funded by the Research Committee of the Technological and Educational Institute of Serres, titled “Design and Implementation of a stereo accelerator, based on the principles of dynamic programming” (project number 13/14.4.2010). The project has been completed successfully.

4. Project coordinator of a research program funded by the Research Committee of the Technological and Educational Institute of Serres, titled “Study of stereo-processing methods using application-specific hardware” (project number 71/13/7.10.2009). The project has been completed successfully.

5. Project coordinator of a research program funded by the Research Committee of the Technological and Educational Institute of Serres, titled “Design and modeling of a stereo-vision co-processor and its FPGA implementation” (project number 5/2.4.2008). The project has been completed successfully.

6. Member of the main research team in a research project titled “Study of computational techniques for stereo-vision processing and FPGA implementations” funded by the Research Committee of the Alexandreion Technological and Educational Institute of Thessaloniki. Project coordinator Prof. Ch. Tzikas. (1/1/2008-31/12/2008).

7. Scientific coordinator of a major European project that aims at the reconstruction of the digital services of the Academic Library of the Technological and Educational Institute of Serres. The project is titled “Digital Services of the Academic Library of the TEI of Serres”. It is funded by the European Fund of Peripheral Development with the contribution of national resources and has a budget of 164,000 €.

8. Member of the main research team of a PENED research project titled “Study of the inactivation of deep traps in the semiconductor GaAs, using the method of annealing in hydrogen plasma atmosphere”. Project coordinator: Prof. Eleni Paloura-AUTH (1.12.1993-30.09.1995).
